Counselling is generally referred to as a talk therapy. A trained counsellor will give you the time and space to talk, they will not offer you their opinions or advice, nor can they prescribe medication but they will listen and guide you to your own solutions in the area that you need.
Some of the areas Counselling can be effective in, but not limited to, are; stress management, anxiety, processing thoughts, feelings and emotions, relationship difficulties, childhood issues, dealing with past or present events.
Psychotherapy is a talking therapy that works at a deeper level to just counselling, exploring both past and present. Psychotherapists use different methods and modalities to support individual needs and therefore are more qualified and experienced to support this deeper exploration.
Some of the areas Psychotherapy can be effective in, but not limited to, are; stress management, bereavement, anxiety, eating disorders, relationship support, depression, PTSD, OCD, BPD, long-term or life limiting illness.
